What We're Up To
Honest Meal Project

Our Story

One dreamer's attempt to make an impact with her life. Motivated by a week-long immersion in industrial agriculture, The Honest Meal Project began as a social experiment. Chef Dana Cox Lipe in an effort to take a stab at Big Ag and reconnect with the people and paths behind her food, made a commitment to live one year eating exclusively farm-to-mouth. Meaning, she'd only eat what she could trace to a real family farm (98% plus local); no take out, no restaurant meals with friends, no grocery store! The mission? To prove that one can opt out of industrial food, to educate others about the origins and truths of their food, and to live by the seasons embracing what Mother Nature offers us where we are. The result? Her life, body, and relationship with food changed forever. She's shared this experience via speaking engagements and a blog, and continues to work on the book, but learned in cooking Honest Meals for others that it's the food that moves the soul.

So what now? Dana has found a way to share this food beyond her kitchen and classroom. Honest Meal Project joins Green City Market this May creating funky seasonal salads and blender soups from locally-sourced produce, grains, and cheeses. To help you eat local at home, hand-crafted Honest Purees will be available at the market, made from that week's best bounty.

Dana is a mom, chef, award-winning culinary educator, and owner of Old Stove Gourmet, LLC; an in-home cooking service providing dynamic meals to busy Chicago foodies since 2004.

Honest Puree "CSA"

Each week we offer seasonal purees crafted from produce from our farmer friends to speed up your honest dinner or feed to baby right from the jar. We'll provide you with ever-changing recipes to put our purees to good use. No peeling, seeding, or de-stringing; just pure produce you can turn into a soup, sauce, filling, or vinaigrette with a few simple steps or dress up your yogurt or oatmeal in a flash. Want to plant the seed for a healthy life for your baby? Our purees couldn't be more wholesome and make awesome baby food; just vegetables and/or fruit, and a little vegetable stock. Dana has become a proud mama since her experiment, and her son is thriving on her hand-crafted purees.

The produce we use is fresh, local, seasonal, and grown on family farms. Our commercial, licensed kitchen is located at Washburne Culinary Institute and Chef Dana is licensed in safe food handling and sanitation by the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois.

How it Works

The term "CSA" means Community Supported Agriculture, and is a subscription of sorts from a farm. Each week the subscriber receives an assortment of produce based on what's ready to be picked that week. A fabulous idea, we love ours, but a box of produce can be overwhelming if kohlrabi or daikon are new to your vocabulary! So our "CSA" is beautiful produce with some labor already invested for you by professional chefs. Cool, huh? Our purees will be based on whatever's abundant and ripe that week. And we'll tell you the origins of everything; that the golden carrots came from Genesis Growers, or the Northern Spy Apples from Ellis Farms. We'll even provide you with a recipe each week to put our jarred beauties to good use and make you look like a rock star at the stove!

Please keep in mind our purees are freshly made and must be refrigerated. Plan to eat or freeze them within four days of the farmers market.

Return the jars each week, and there's no cost to the container! If you forget them or want to hang on to them, no worries.

Why subscribe? You'll get better pricing per jar than buying from us piece-meal, and if there's limited quantities of something one week, subscribers get first dibs!!

Not ready to commit? Come see us at the market and pick up a single jar or ask for a sample!

We want to be the most sustainable business we can be, so, don't throw the beautiful jars away, bring 'em back! Even if you buy our purees occasionally, return the jars for a credit toward another purchase; even the salads and soups! We wash and sanitize them in a commercial high-temp dishwasher just like restaurants do their plates and silverware, and nothing goes in the land fill. Woot woot!!

Need to cancel or suspend service for time away? No problem, simply give us 72 hours notice prior to your next market pick-up and let us know how long you'll be gone!
